32~001|001 JONAH` Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
32~001|001 YONA` And the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying.
32~001|002 JONAH` Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
32~001|002 YONA` Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.
32~001|003 JONAH` But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.
32~001|003 YONA` But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Jaffa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare for it, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish away from the presence of the Lord.
32~001|004 JONAH` But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.
32~001|004 YONA` But the Lord sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship seemed likely to break up.
32~001|005 JONAH` Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man to his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
32~001|005 YONA` Then the sailors were afraid, and cried each one to his own god, and they threw the wares that were in the ship to the sea, to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the interior of the ship; and had lain down, and was fast asleep.
32~001|006 JONAH` So the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, What meanest you, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
32~001|006 YONA` So the ship's captain came to him, and said to him, What do you mean, O sleeper? Arise! Call upon your God! Perhaps God will give a thought to us, that we do not perish.
32~001|007 JONAH` And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
32~001|007 YONA` And they said to one another, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.
32~001|008 JONAH` Then said they to him, Tell us, we pray you, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is yours occupation? and where come you? What is thy country? and of what people art you?
32~001|008 YONA` Then they said to him, Tell us, we beg you, for whose cause is this evil upon us? What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?
32~001|009 JONAH` And he said to them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.
32~001|009 YONA` And he said to them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.
32~001|010 JONAH` Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him. Why hast you done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.
32~001|010 YONA` Then the men were very afraid, and said to him, Why have you done this? For the men knew that he had fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.
32~001|011 JONAH` Then said they to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.
32~001|011 YONA` Then they said to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may calm down for us? For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.
32~001|012 JONAH` And he said to them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.
32~001|012 YONA` And he said to them, Take me up, and throw me into the sea; then the sea will calm down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great tempest is upon you.
32~001|013 JONAH` Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.
32~001|013 YONA` Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it back to land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.
32~001|014 JONAH` Wherefore they cried to the Lord, and said, We beseech you, O Lord, we beseech you, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for you, O Lord, hast done as it pleased you.
32~001|014 YONA` And they cried to the Lord, and said, We pray you, O Lord, we pray you, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood; for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.
32~001|015 JONAH` So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.
32~001|015 YONA` So they took Jonah up, and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.
32~001|016 JONAH` Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord, and made vows.
32~001|016 YONA` Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord, and made vows.
32~001|017 JONAH` Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
32~002|001 JONAH` Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,
32~002|001 YONA` And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
32~002|002 JONAH` And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction to the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and you heardest my voice.
32~002|002 YONA` Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish.
32~002|003 JONAH` For you hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
32~002|003 YONA` And said, I cried to the Lord out of my distress, and he heard me; from the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.
32~002|004 JONAH` Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
32~002|004 YONA` For you cast me into the deep, in the heart of the seas; and the floods surrounded me; all your billows and your waves passed over me.
32~002|005 JONAH` The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
32~002|005 YONA` Then I said, I am cast out from your presence; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.
32~002|006 JONAH` I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast you brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God.
32~002|006 YONA` The waters surrounded me, even to the soul; the depth closed around me, the weeds were wrapped around my head.
32~002|007 JONAH` When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in to you, into yours holy temple.
32~002|007 YONA` I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars closed on me for ever; yet have you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God.
32~002|008 JONAH` They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
32~002|008 YONA` When my soul fainted inside me I remembered the Lord; and my prayer came to you, to your holy temple.
32~002|009 JONAH` But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.
32~002|009 YONA` Those who pay regard to lying vanities forsake their loyalty.
32~002|010 JONAH` And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
32~002|010 YONA` But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to the Lord.
32~002|011 YONA` And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
32~003|001 JONAH` And the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,
32~003|001 YONA` And the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying: Arise!
32~003|002 JONAH` Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the preaching that I bid you.
32~003|002 YONA` Go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I bid you.
32~003|003 JONAH` So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
32~003|003 YONA` And Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. And Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in extent.
32~003|004 JONAH` And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
32~003|004 YONA` And Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Another forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
32~003|005 JONAH` So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
32~003|005 YONA` And the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
32~003|006 JONAH` For word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
32~003|006 YONA` And word came to the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he took off his robe, and covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
32~003|007 JONAH` And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
32~003|007 YONA` And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying: Neither man, beast, herd or flock should taste anything! They should not feed nor drink water!
32~003|008 JONAH` But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
32~003|008 YONA` And let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
32~003|009 JONAH` Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
32~003|009 YONA` Who can tell if God may yet turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we perish not?
32~003|010 JONAH` And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do to them; and he did it not.
32~003|010 YONA` And God saw their doings, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, which he had said that he would do to them; and he did not do it.
32~004|001 JONAH` But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
32~004|001 YONA` And this displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
32~004|002 JONAH` And he prayed to the Lord, and said, I pray you, O Lord, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before to Tarshish: for I knew that you art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest you of the evil.
32~004|002 YONA` And he prayed to the Lord, and said, I pray you, O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I hastened to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and that you repent of the evil.
32~004|003 JONAH` Therefore now, O Lord, take, I beseech you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
32~004|003 YONA` Therefore now, O Lord, take, I pray you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.
32~004|004 JONAH` Then said the Lord, Doest you well to be angry?
32~004|004 YONA` Then says the Lord, Do you do well to be so angry?
32~004|005 JONAH` So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city.
32~004|005 YONA` And Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there he made himself a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he should see what would become of the city.
32~004|006 JONAH` And the Lord God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd.
32~004|006 YONA` And the Lord God appointed a castor oil plant, and made it grow over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to save him from his distress. And Jonah was exceedingly glad of the plant.
32~004|007 JONAH` But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered.
32~004|007 YONA` And, when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm, and it attacked the plant so that it withered.
32~004|008 JONAH` And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
32~004|008 YONA` And it came to pass, when the sun rose, that God appointed a hot east wind; and the sun beat down upon the head of Jonah, so that he fainted, and wished to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
32~004|009 JONAH` And God said to Jonah, Doest you well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even to death.
32~004|009 YONA` And God said to Jonah: Do you do well to be so angry for the plant? And he said: I do well to be so angry, even to death.
32~004|010 JONAH` Then said the Lord, You hast had pity on the gourd, for the which you hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
32~004|010 YONA` Then the Lord said, You had concern for the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night.
32~004|011 JONAH` And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than six score thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
32~004|011 YONA` And should I not spare Nineveh, that great city, where there are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
